Comment: I brought our Jeep Liberty in for an inspection. I was told the transfer case on the 4WD was "full of metal" and my rear drive train was "bent." They even suggested contacting my insurance agent because of the bent drive train. Also said I needed rear brakes and four new tires (I had just purchased two but they did not match the other two...and the service dept suggested the two I had would not work...better to get four new). Total Estimate: $2400.00.
I took it to another dealership 15 miles away. No transfer case, no bent drive train.
I called back and talked to the Servie Mgr. He suggested the other dealership actually needed to open the transfer case and inspect...not plug it into a computer. The other dealership did just that. They also ran a magnet through all fluids, etc. and found no metal shards. Hardly "full of metal".
In the end, I spent $700 on new tires, tune-up, other service items, etc (only one of the things--tires--was actually needed from the first diagnosis). The two tires I had put on were fine. This group found two matching tires and all is well. No rear brakes required. Four wheel drive works great (always get four matching tires...that was my entire problem).
In the final analysis I'd say be careful if you're needing anything more than an oil change.
